Star Fleet Universe News

The Legacy Site has undergone a major makeover. The new front page (by Matt Cooper) is now much more professional (not to mention prettier). Matt has also added a Site Map with buttons for the most-wanted areas, and a Master Site Index which lists everything on the site with direct links to it. Please keep your eyes open as the changes continue and report any typos and give suggestions. This is your site, let's work together to make it better!

We are looking for a few good Star Fleet Ambassadors! As the marketing director, I can't be everywhere and that's where you come in! Do you go to gaming forums like Board Game Geek, RPG Net, or The Miniatures Page? Then WE NEED YOU! To get complete details of the Ambassador program, please see the Federation Commander Ambassadors category on the Federation Commander forum.

FC Forum Hot Topics

The Federation Commander Site and Forum continues to grow as more gamers find it. This month’s Hot Topics include a thread titled “FC: Expansions without counters?” located under the General Discussion category. Another popular thread is the “Hydran Stinger Miniatures” which can be found in the Miniatures category. For new players, the Legacy Discus forum can make one feel overwhelmed and lost whereas the new Federation Commander Forum is a little easier to manage as a newcomer. Come see what all the commotion is a about and join the Federation Commander Forum now!

FC Tactic of the Month
TO DIRECT OR NOT DIRECT?

The directed targeting rules in Federation Commander allow general targeting of weapons or power. However, there is a cost to this; "skipped" damage points are lost.

Let's take this example. Score 30 points of internal damage on a fleet-scale Klingon F5 by directed-on-weapons, directed-on-power, and standard targeting.

Directed-weapons: Ship crippled, but has some warp to leave the map. Seven missed hits due to lack of the right kind of internals. (More...)

SFB Tactic of the Month
HELLBORE LABS

As a Hydran tournament player, my nightmare opponent is the Orion. Often, the Orion will come screaming onto the map at high speed with doubled engines. All of that power has to be somewhere, usually in a heavily reinforced shield. Since I usually overload my Hellbores during Energy Allocation, this runs the risk of the Orion firing at medium-range and avoiding the overloads, or firing close enough to penetrate my shields and kill a fully-armed Hellbore before it can fire. USING THE PENAL PF FLOTILLA

The Penal PF Flotilla is a valuable addition to the Klingon Navy. It can complete all three Penal-missions, but is fundamentally different from penal frigates and cruisers for three reasons:
1. Penal PF Flotillas are extremely expendable. Since penal ships can be directed on at 1:1, they will almost always be destroyed when they are used. For a penal ship, this means a ship worth 4-9 economic points will be destroyed. However, destruction of a penal PF flotilla causes only 2.5 economic points for ten damage points; the same ratio as crippling "even" ships. (More...)

FEDERATION AND EMPIRE
The Federation and Empire events ran under the supervision of Charles Strong. There were several different events, all run nearly continuously throughout Origins. Different players arrived, commanded a sector for a period, and departed. Others held their "commands" for most of a day or more as the tides of battle swept back and forth. The events were run by Charles Strong, ably assisted by Mike Curtis and Tony Thomas. (More...)

Rescue on Roon

2300 hrs, Basement of Warehouse #8, Celotex Import Export, Planet Roon

"Is the brat still whining?" Melika asked.

"Yes," her sister Annitha responded. "If that's an example of Federation manhood, I'll stick to the locals."

"Not me," Besslith answered. "Lieutenant Kahl is going to take me with him on his next run, and I'll knock the dust of this planet off my feet for the last time."

"You and your Orion lover," Melika sneered. "You can't really think he's serious. He's probably got a girlfriend on every planet. Father told you not to get involved with him. They're just business associates. They buy, they sell, and they leave."

"Did I say anything about marrying him?" Besslith answered. "I want space, not a husband, and he'll get me to the nearest Orion base where I can get a working passage on a ship and start learning how starships work. By the time I'm 40, I will be the captain of my own raider. (More...)

Ask Admiral Growler

TACTICAL INTELLIGENCE
Frank Brooks asks: One of the pieces of information gained at Level A is the specific unit that launches or fires a weapon is known. Does this apply to drones launched before the scenario begins under (S4.13)? Or does this only apply to things launched after the scenario begins?
ANSWER: The launch from the "previous turn" was observed and the launcher would be known under level A.
Follow-up question: Does this rule apply to fighters?
ANSWER: This rule applies to "the launching unit", so fighters would be included.

Seth Iniguez asks: If a group of ships are in the same hex, and they are all escorted by ECM drones or ECPs, do you have to reveal which is escorting which? A drone swarm escorted by an ECM drone does not reveal who is lending (FD9.21), so I don't think a ship escort has to reveal either.
ANSWER: Rule (FD9.21) only applies to an ECM drone escorting other drones. It does not override the general fact that both the source and target are known in other cases (D17.194).

Federation & Empire Q&A

QUESTION: Rule (537.12) says "Once per turn, one resistance movement on one planet can attempt to infiltrate one of the ships (not bases) at the planet's location." One per side or one per race?
ANSWER: One per race.

QUESTION: If I capture a planet during the enemy turn, does it take longer (two and a half turns) for me to start getting EPs?
ANSWER: Yes, because you get income from new planets on your second subsequent Economic Phase that you possess the planet. (508.22). (More...)
